In my time observing the American social landscape, I've noticed a troubling trend that has almost reached the level of an unspoken doctrine: the aversion to discussing difficult issues. We've all heard the age-old adage, "Don't talk about religion or politics." But I can't help but ask, if we're not talking about the issues that shape our lives and our world, then what are we talking about?

Forgive me if I find the latest Hollywood gossip uninteresting or if small talk about the weather leaves me disengaged. The truth is, these trivial conversations are not just boring; they're a symptom of a larger problem. We've become a society that shies away from the uncomfortable, the challenging, and the complex. And in doing so, we're doing a disservice not just to ourselves but to our country as a whole.

There was a time when Americans prided themselves on their ability to tackle tough issues head-on. Whether it was around the dinner table, at the local pub, or in the public square, people weren't afraid to express their opinions, challenge each other, and, most importantly, learn from one another. It's this kind of discourse that has driven progress, fostered understanding, and made us a stronger, more resilient society.

So, why have we stopped? Why have we traded meaningful dialogue for safe, surface-level interactions? The answer is complex, but the solution starts with each one of us. We must be willing to step out of our comfort zones, to listen as much as we speak, and to approach each conversation as an opportunity for growth.

In this week’s Sunday Edition, we're diving deep into this issue. We'll explore the consequences of avoiding difficult conversations and offer actionable steps for how we can reclaim this lost art.
