Ohio News
Recreational Marijuana Hits the Ballot
As Ohio's November ballot takes shape, a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana has officially qualified, setting the stage for a contentious battle that could have broader implications for the political landscape. The measure, which would allow adults 21 and older to possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana, is more than just a debate about drug policy. It's a strategic move that could drive progressive turnout in an election where abortion rights are also at stake.
The marijuana proposal comes with a 10% tax, with revenue earmarked for administration, addiction treatment, local governments, and a social equity program. While polls show that 58% of Ohio voters support legalizing marijuana for adults 21 and older, the initiative faces staunch opposition from a coalition of hospitals, police, and Republican politicians.
But the political dynamics of this proposal are more complex than a simple yes-or-no vote on marijuana. The initiative's appearance on the ballot, shortly after Ohio voters rejected raising the threshold to pass amendments from 50% to 60%, is seen by some conservatives as a calculated move by progressive groups. They argue that the threshold should have been raised to prevent policies like marijuana legalization from being easily passed.
Ohio's governor opposes legalizing marijuana, but the potential $275-$450 million in annual tax revenue generated from legal sales adds an economic dimension to the debate. If passed, Ohio would become the 24th state to fully legalize marijuana.
What makes this proposal particularly intriguing is its timing. Legalizing marijuana alongside an abortion rights amendment could be a potent combination to drive progressive turnout in November. The left may be attempting to use the marijuana initiative as an additional way to galvanize their base, especially among young and Democratic voters.
The alignment of these issues on the ballot is not accidental. It's a strategic maneuver by progressive forces that recognizes the interconnected nature of political battles. By linking the popular push for marijuana legalization with the deeply divisive issue of abortion rights, they are attempting to create a synergy that could tip the scales in their favor.
Conservatives must remain vigilant and rally together to counter this strategy. The opposition group against the marijuana proposal will undoubtedly recognize this strategy and respond accordingly, but it will take a concerted effort to counteract this liberal agenda. The coming months will likely see an intensification of political rhetoric and campaigning as both sides seek to leverage the marijuana initiative for their broader political goals. The stakes are high, and conservatives must rally to ensure that they do not witness the liberalization of their state come November.

Victory for Gun Rights: Ohio Court Overrules Columbus' Restrictions
The battle over gun laws in Columbus, Ohio, continues to rage, with the latest development being an Ohio appeals court overturning a lower court ruling that blocked the state's law prohibiting local gun restrictions. This ruling is a significant step in the right direction, affirming the importance of uniform state gun laws and pushing back against the liberal agenda that seeks to impose strict gun controls.
Columbus has been attempting to enforce local gun laws, despite state preemption laws and court rulings upholding them. This is a clear example of the left's relentless pursuit to ruin Columbus, modeling it after other liberal blue cities across the country where strict gun laws, high crime, and extreme liberal policies prevail.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has been a beacon of reason in this fight, calling the recent ruling an "important victory" that ensures all Ohioans follow the same state gun laws. His quote, "The court’s ruling assures that all Ohioans must abide by the same law, state law, when it comes to firearms," resonates with those who understand the importance of consistent and fair legislation.
The city's attempts to enforce its new gun ordinances have already been blocked by a Delaware County judge, yet the Columbus City Attorney insists that this is just one step in reaffirming the city's rights, vowing to continue the legal fight. This stubborn insistence on pursuing ineffective and failed gun policies is a testament to the misguided priorities of the city's leadership.
Yost's firm stance against these absurd attempts to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens is a significant and commendable effort in the fight for consistent and fair legislation. The fight is far from over, but this recent ruling is a promising sign that common sense may prevail. Let us hope that the city's leadership recognizes the folly of their ways and abandons their pursuit of policies that have proven time and again to be ineffective in reducing crime and only serve to restrict the rights of responsible gun owners. The people of Columbus deserve better, and it's time for the city to align itself with the laws of the state and the principles of freedom and individual responsibility.

DeWine's Literacy Push: A Noble Goal, But Will It Strain Ohio's Teachers?
Ohio's new two-year budget, set to bring transformative improvements to the education system starting this fall, has been met with both praise and concern. While the budget focuses on literacy, education, and workforce preparation, aiming to help students succeed, some educators are raising red flags about the potential strain on an already understaffed teacher labor force.
The budget's emphasis on reversing declining literacy rates through funding aligned with the science of reading is a commendable goal. However, according to an Ohio educator who spoke with The W.C. Dispatch, the initiative may lead to unintended consequences. The educator, who requested anonymity, expressed concerns that the focus on reading fluency rather than comprehension could be misguided. Moreover, the requirement for teachers to pay out of pocket for new training could exacerbate existing challenges.
"Teachers already have to undergo extremely extensive training and guidelines to become teachers," the educator told The Dispatch. This includes a four-year resident educator program, a degree, often a master's, and a teaching license. With a current teacher shortage in Ohio, the educator fears that the new initiative could make the problem even worse.
The budget's creation of a new Department of Education and Workforce, aimed at fostering collaboration on education and career readiness, is a positive step. The increase in funding for traditional public, charter, and private schools, as well as the expansion of college financial aid, are also promising developments. However, the educator's concerns highlight potential pitfalls in the approach to literacy.
The focus on reading fluency, while important, may overlook the critical aspect of comprehension. The educator believes that a more balanced approach, recognizing the complexity of reading development, would be more effective. Additionally, the financial burden placed on teachers for additional training could deter potential educators from entering the field, further straining the labor force.
Governor DeWine's initiative is undoubtedly well-intentioned, aiming to align education with workforce needs and the economy. However, as the Ohio educator's insights reveal, the path to achieving these goals may not be as straightforward as it seems. The focus on reading fluency, the potential strain on teachers, and the risk of exacerbating the teacher shortage are issues that must be carefully considered.

American Headlines
The EPA’s War on American Energy
In the bloated swamp-filled marshes of D.C.'s bureaucracy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stands out for its relentless pursuit of a singular agenda. Over the years, this agency has consistently worked to undermine energy production in the United States, often disregarding legal or judicial ramifications or rulings. The war on American energy is not a new phenomenon, but the tactics and strategies have evolved, becoming more insidious and damaging to the nation's energy independence.
One of the first casualties in this war was Allegheny Power, a coal plant that fell victim to the EPA's deliberate and calculated burden. Faced with the choice between low sulfur 'clean coal' or scrubbers, both options pushed their prices soaring, costing roughly 1 billion dollars. The EPA forced this decision onto a retiring official at the company, knowing it was a lose-lose situation. Allegheny Power chose the scrubbers, only to find themselves ensnared in a regulatory trap.
After installing the scrubbers, the EPA changed what they were measuring from sulfur to mercury. This was not a mere shift in focus but a strategic maneuver. Once they had the ability to measure mercury, they then had the ability to change the regulation and shut them down. The change in regulation and the new focus on measuring mercury suddenly rendered all the coal plants in West Virginia non-compliant, leading to their shutdown. The result was a shutdown of these plants, a move that was not only successful but also revealed the EPA's deliberate intent to close coal plants.
The EPA's war on American Energy has been a slow roll, but their goal is clear: to kill American Energy. Their push towards green energy production is a failed enterprise, not because they recognize it as such, but because they are clueless and believe the planet can go green overnight. This misguided belief is not about finding a solution but about driving up the price of American Energy, crippling producers, and putting them out of business.
Transitioning into the modern era, in March 2022, EPA administrator Michael Regan made comments that laid bare the administration's plan to impose climate regulations through a "suite of rules" under various programs, not relying on any specific authority. This approach was aimed at pressuring power plants and other disfavored operations to close and compel investment in clean energy. The EPA's actions reveal a pattern of overreach and a lack of understanding of the complexities of energy production, reflecting a dangerous trend that threatens the very core of American industry.
The Supreme Court's rejection of the Obama-era Clean Power Plan was clear: the EPA lacked the transformative regulatory power to enact such measures without explicit authorization from Congress. Despite this ruling, the current administration appears undeterred, continuing its strategy of targeting power plants with a multitude of regulations, such as haze rules, even after the Court's rejection of their climate authority claims.
Emails obtained through FOIA lawsuits expose the Biden EPA team's deliberate planning of this barrage of rules approach. Far from a mere policy decision, this strategy is seen as a calculated attempt to circumvent constitutional limits, a perilous maneuver that undermines the very foundations of our democratic system.
The Court's recent ruling emphasizes that repurposing old laws to force a climate agenda overreach demands express congressional approval. The EPA's intentional disregard for both the Court and Congress is a brazen act that illustrates an agency acting without restraint. More reversals seem inevitable as the EPA continues to inflict harm, reflecting a troubling trend of government bureaucrats acting as if they are above oversight and accountability.

The Incompetence of the IRS
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has long been a symbol of bureaucratic inefficiency, but recent events have cast the agency in an even more unflattering light. From failing to process Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) forms to the tragic accidental shooting of an agent, the IRS has proven itself to be grossly incompetent and clearly unable to perform its simple tasks.
In his Wall Street Journal article, Senator JD Vance highlights the glaring inefficiency of the IRS, even after receiving additional funding and resources. Despite these provisions, the IRS has failed to process Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) forms in a timely manner, causing delays in COVID-19 relief money for small businesses. The ERTC was designed by Congress to assist businesses in retaining employees during the pandemic shutdowns by offering tax credits for wages paid. However, the IRS remains overwhelmed with a backlog of over 500,000 unprocessed forms. Adding to the concern, the commissioner falsely claimed that this backlog was cleared. This situation illustrates broader issues within the IRS and federal agencies as a whole, demonstrating that simply allocating more resources does not necessarily lead to better outcomes if the focus and incentives are not properly aligned.
The IRS's handling of the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) has been nothing short of a failure. Despite being given additional funding and resources, the agency has been unable to efficiently process ERTC forms, delaying COVID-19 relief money for small businesses. The backlog of over 500,000 unprocessed forms remains, and the commissioner's false claim that the backlog was cleared only adds to the frustration. The lesson here is clear, and the IRS must urgently deliver on promises of COVID relief by efficiently processing ERTC claims and getting the overdue money to deserving small businesses.
But the incompetence doesn't end there. An IRS agent was killed in an accidental shooting by another agent during a training exercise at a Phoenix gun range. The agent was taken to a medical center where he was pronounced dead, and the FBI is now investigating. This infuriating example of the absolute incompetence of the agency raises serious questions about the IRS's expansion efforts, including hiring 87,000 more agents, 70,000 of whom would be armed.
Why are IRS agents being given guns in the first place? They were never armed agents before this bill, and clearly shouldn't be. Republicans have criticized the expansion and proposed legislation to block funding for the new agents. There has also been scrutiny of the IRS's ammunition stockpile as Democrats approved $80 billion more in IRS funding.
The IRS's bureaucratic failures in administering COVID relief and the accidental shooting of an agent underscore the absurdity of arming a tax collection agency and raise serious concerns about the direction and priorities of the IRS. Why are we arming an agency that has proven itself to be grossly incompetent in its core mission?

Biden Administration Welcomes World War III
As tensions continue to rise in Eastern Europe, the Biden administration's decision to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine marks a significant and alarming escalation. This move, which comes after initial reluctance from the President, has not only triggered warnings from Russia but also raises serious questions about the administration's judgment and the potential consequences for global stability.
The decision to send F-16s to Ukraine was welcomed by Ukraine's President Zelensky, who has been insisting on getting the planes. The U.S. has given assurances that it would expedite transfer requests once Ukrainian pilots are trained, and a coalition of 11 countries will start training Ukrainian pilots on the F-16s in Denmark this month.
Wopke Hoekstra, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, expressed his support, stating, “We welcome Washington's decision to pave the way for sending F16 Fighter Jets to Ukraine. Many thanks to Sec. Blinken for the good and swift cooperation. Now, we will further discuss the subject with our European partners. This marks a major milestone for Ukraine to defend its people and its country.”
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that U.S. F-16 fighters that could be given to Ukraine can accommodate nuclear weapons and that supplying Ukraine with F-16s would further escalate the conflict. Russia has also dismissed the impact of F-16 transfers to Ukraine but warned that strikes on Crimea would be considered attacks on Russia itself.
The decision to send F-16s to Ukraine is particularly concerning given that Biden himself had previously resisted sending jets to Ukraine, warning that it could lead to World War III. Now, he seems to be doing the very thing he said might cause it, dragging the U.S. into a conflict and spending billions of American tax dollars on this war.
Furthermore, this move forces Russia into China's hands, creating a geopolitical shift that could have long-lasting implications. Why are we allowing this to happen, especially when it has now been proven that Biden's family has been getting millions from the Ukrainians for years in corrupt business dealings with his son Hunter?
The Biden administration's decision to send F-16s to Ukraine raises questions about NATO's role and does not undermine Russia's military goals. Russia claims Ukraine lacks the infrastructure and pilots to operate F-16s, and some Russian diplomats have called any F-16 transfer "useless and meaningless" against Russia's capabilities.
At the G7 summit, leaders signaled long-term support for Ukraine, and Zelensky said he was confident of getting F-16s. Russia portrays the conflict as against the West, while Ukraine and allies say it's an unprovoked land grab. Antonov accused the U.S. of subordinating G7 countries to its Ukraine agenda.
After initial reluctance, the Biden administration has now approved transfers of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from allies, triggering warnings from Russia about escalation. This decision not only threatens to destabilize the region but also reflects a lack of foresight and understanding of the complex dynamics at play.
As we witness the escalating tensions, we must condemn the sheer incompetence of this move and the motivations driving it. Are we being thrust toward World War III by an administration that appears to be acting in blatant disregard of its own warnings? The American people deserve answers, and they deserve a government that operates with competence and integrity, not one that recklessly propels us toward global conflict and instability. The current course is not only unwise but a glaring example of failure in leadership that could have catastrophic consequences.

The NCLU’s Plan to Save Trump
The National Constitutional Law Union (NCLU) has recently released a comprehensive legal memorandum titled "NCLU Strategy Memorandum Against the Trump Indictments." Authored by Todd J. Aldinger, Esq., and Gavin Wax, the document outlines the legal arguments against the indictments made against former President Donald Trump. It emphasizes the historical context of executive power and argues for a broad understanding of presidential immunity from legal liability.
The memorandum begins by asserting that President Trump is protected from legal liability for any actions he took while in office, unless first convicted of impeachment. Two forms of this argument are presented: Absolute Immunity and Outer Perimeter of Executive Powers. The latter protects actions that fall within the "outer perimeter" of his executive powers, such as paying "hush money" to prevent potential blackmail.
The document emphasizes the historical context of executive power, referring to the Articles of Confederation and the drafting of the Constitution in 1787-1789. It argues that the President's executive power is broad and unqualified, subject only to specific exceptions listed in the Constitution.
The memorandum applies these arguments to the Federal Espionage Act Indictment, emphasizing that Mr. Trump transferred classified documents to himself while still in office, and this action is protected by his executive authority. It also applies the argument to the Federal 2020 Election Indictment, emphasizing his authority and duty to enforce laws relating to the 2020 election.
The document asserts that the arguments presented do not expand presidential power but rather clarify the existing understanding of executive authority and immunity. It concludes with reasons to believe that the Supreme Court may be receptive to these arguments, including preventing future litigation against former presidents and embedding the historical analysis framework of specific precedents.
The genesis of this theory can be traced to Article II of the Constitution, which proclaims, "the executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." This vesting clause aligns with the broader constitutional framework, endowing presidents with expansive dominion over the executive branch. The Constitution's clear mandate that the president possesses the prerogative to appoint principal officials further underscores the depth of presidential influence.
James Madison, in his writings in the Federalist Papers, emphasized the importance of checks and balances and the separation of powers. Prominent figures in modern jurisprudence, like the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, fervently championed the unitary executive theory, asserting that the very essence of a presidential administration is to exercise unbridled authority over the executive branch.
The NCLU's memorandum is a detailed legal argument against the indictments made against former President Trump. It draws on the Unitary Executive Theory, emphasizing the historical context of executive power and arguing for a broad understanding of presidential immunity from legal liability.
As the legal battle unfolds, the NCLU's strategy memorandum provides a robust defense for the former President, grounded in constitutional principles and historical precedent. Whether the Supreme Court will be receptive to these arguments remains to be seen, but the memorandum offers a compelling case that may shape the legal landscape for years to come.

The Green Pandemic
The recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has ignited a debate that goes beyond mere fiscal policy. It has set the stage for what some are calling a "Green Pandemic," a scenario where the government's prioritization of green energy and climate change could lead to a new form of lockdown, this time on climate grounds.
Last summer, President Biden considered declaring a national climate emergency when the climate bill stalled in the Senate. Such a declaration would unlock additional presidential powers, allowing Biden to halt fossil fuel production and exports, going further than the IRA's incentives. However, after the surprise revival and passage of the IRA, talks of an emergency declaration were put on the backburner.
Some Congressional Democrats are still pushing Biden to declare a climate emergency to enable further climate action, while Republicans have introduced legislation to bar presidents from using emergency powers for climate change. Opponents argue that an emergency declaration doesn't fit climate change well legally and wouldn't unlock major new climate authorities or funding.
The administration's focus on implementing the IRA rather than an emergency declaration for now raises questions about the true intentions behind the act. The IRA prioritizes climate change over medical care in American health policy for the first time, spending over $1 trillion on green energy but only a fraction of that on improving Medicare.
Much of the $280 billion Medicare drug savings went to climate policies like EV tax credits rather than health benefits. This is despite Medicare costs projected to rise dramatically and many enrollees unable to afford EVs. It stems from a campaign to rebrand climate change as a public health issue to increase funding, with health groups declaring climate the greatest health threat during COVID-19 to combat stagnating climate action.
The Inflation Reduction Act responded by diverting Medicare savings to climate instead of health, potentially forcing Medicare to raise premiums or cut benefits in the future. This alarming shift shows that green energy and cars are so inefficient that the government has to take money from our healthcare system to support them.
The act's prioritization of climate change over medical care for the first time after a campaign to frame climate as a health issue, despite projected increases in Medicare costs, reveals a concerning trend. It suggests that the corrupt Biden administration will do anything within its bounds to achieve its goals, even if that means another lockdown, this time on climate grounds.
The Inflation Reduction Act has opened a Pandora's box of potential consequences, intertwining climate policy with healthcare and setting the stage for a "Green Pandemic." As the nation grapples with the implications of this landmark legislation, the question remains: Are we sacrificing essential healthcare for an inefficient and politically driven climate agenda? The answer may have far-reaching consequences for the American people and the future of our nation.

The Lindell Election Integrity Summit
Mike Lindell, the CEO of MyPillow, has become a controversial figure in the post-2020 election landscape. His recent Election Crime Bureau Summit, where he revealed a new device purported to detect internet connections at polling places, has once again thrust him into the spotlight. But the story here is not just about Lindell's claims or his new device; it's about the chilling effect that legal battles are having on the discussion of election integrity.
Dominion Voting Systems is suing Lindell for $1.3 billion, accusing him of defaming the company with voter fraud claims. Despite this massive lawsuit hanging over him, Lindell continues to hold the same positions on election fraud. He has even said he is "very happy" about the lawsuit, believing it will bring evidence of fraud to light faster.
Lindell's persistence in pushing election fraud allegations, even after being banned from Twitter and having retailers drop his products, has made him a polarizing figure. His appearance on Newsmax, where he was cut off for ranting about election fraud, illustrates how even right-leaning media sees Lindell as too fringe with his continued voter fraud pushing.
But is this reaction solely about the veracity of Lindell's claims, or is there something else at play? The Dominion settlement with Fox News earlier this year has sent shockwaves through the media landscape. News agencies are now seemingly afraid to even mention election fraud, a topic that Lindell continues to discuss openly.
Whether Lindell is right or wrong, no one can deny the strange issues with the previous election. At least Mike Lindell is standing for what he believes in, even if it bankrupts him. He has borrowed $10 million to fight the lawsuits and calls them "garbage."
The broader question here is about the freedom to question and investigate. The legal battles and media's reluctance to engage with these topics are setting a precedent that could stifle open debate and inquiry. The fact that Lindell's summit is focused on a device to ensure election integrity, with plans for 5,000 devices in use this fall, shows that he is not backing down.
In a democracy, the integrity of the electoral process is paramount. While Lindell's claims may be disputed, the fear that has permeated the media landscape is concerning.

Douglas Murray & Things Worth Remembering
In a world that often feels rushed and superficial, it's refreshing to find thoughtful reflections on timeless themes. This week, we urge our readers to explore a weekly column by Douglas Murray, a writer known for his incisive commentary and deep insights. In his recent piece, Murray delves into the 18th-century poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray, a work that continues to resonate with readers today.
Gray's elegy is a masterful exploration of the human condition, evoking the English countryside with a melancholy and nostalgic tone. It's a poem that has inspired authors like Thomas Hardy, who borrowed a line for the title of his novel "Far From the Madding Crowd." But more than its literary influence, the poem's themes of mortality, the transience of life, and the universality of death are what make it a timeless classic.
Murray's analysis of the poem is both profound and accessible. He encourages readers to consider the brevity of life and the importance of not wasting our limited time on distractions. By meditating on death, Gray's elegy promotes living fully and authentically. It's a message that feels particularly relevant in our fast-paced modern world, where it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters.
The poem also contemplates the obscurity of potential greatness, wondering how many gifted individuals like Milton or Cromwell lie unnoticed and uncelebrated. It's a poignant reminder of life's fleetingness and the importance of recognizing and nurturing talent.
Murray's column is not just an analysis of a classic poem; it's a call to reflection and mindfulness. It urges us to remember the value of using our time well and not letting life go by unnoticed. It's a message that transcends generations and speaks to the human experience.
For those interested in exploring these themes further, we highly recommend tuning in to the podcast that Douglas Murray did with Jordan Peterson. Their conversation promises to be a stimulating and enlightening exploration of literature, philosophy, and the human condition.
In a world that often feels disconnected from its roots, works like Gray's elegy and thoughtful analysis like Murray's provide a grounding perspective. They remind us of the universal truths that bind us together and the timeless wisdom that can guide us through our transient lives. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with some of the most profound thoughts on life, death, and everything in between.
